as far as im concerned..

forget the past, because it happened, it's over, nothing will ever change it, no amount of lies can make what's already happened better, and looming over something that doesn't exist anymore is as useless as trying to climb a 100 foot glass wall with your bare hands. it's gone, it can't hurt you anymore, forget it. it's not worth it. trust me.

never mind the future. it hasn't happened yet, and for all you know, it may never will. you can't predict a single thing in the future, you can only make educated guesses as to what you hope or fear will happen. upsetting yourself over it is self destructive. the future is a myth, a lie, a concept, an idea, a fabrication what have you. but all of those things are not real, because they haven't materialized. they haven't come true. you may not have a tomorrow. or tomorrow could be the best day of your life. tomorrow might not even come for anyone, because for all we know, the world and the universe could cease to exist completely without warning tomorrow. whatever 'tomorrow' is, it hasn't happened, there for it isn't real, and isn't anything to fret about. obsessing over the future won't get you what you want in life. it'll make you miserable.

if you want to get what you want in life, the only thing you can do is live for today. today is the only thing that exists. the only thing you exist within. today is the only thing you can change, control, destroy, improve, etc. you want to go to college? do it now; research schools, research grants and scholarships, get a job, do what's necessary to achieve the goal. want to have friends? what are you waiting for? today's the day. go out and MAKE friends, because they're sure as hell not gonna come knocking at your door. the only one controlling your life is you, right here, right now. the past is extinct and the future is just an idea that doesn't actually exist. do you have hopes and dreams? dreaming about them some more only insures that you will never achieve them. the only way to make dreams into reality is living in the moment, focusing on the task at hand, and taking life one day at a time. take things as they come.

past and future can go suck it.

im out.

I am inclined to agree with you, but this stamp's message isn't about obsessing over the past or future, and the most important part (to me, certainly) is "live today". Cherishing the past doesn't mean letting it loom over you, or longing for it back - it's just about being able to reminisce occasionally, think "ah, good times", and get on with it.
As you said, nobody knows what our individual futures hold - but that doesn't mean we can't think about it a little and have goals, as long as what we're doing today is actually helping us achieve them. Obviously, dreaming without taking action gets you nowhere. This message doesn't encourage anybody to "fret" over the future, though. c:
I agree with your last paragraph about living for today, and this stamp doesn't discourage that at all.

I personally take this mantra to mean "Keep special memories and look forward to great things, but how you live today will have the final word."
