Evolution Stamp by Kezzi-Rose Evolution Stamp by Kezzi-Rose

"When I view all beings not as special creations, but as the lineal descendants of some few beings which lived long before the first bed of the Cambrian system was deposited, they seem to me to become ennobled."

— Charles Darwin, On the Origin of Species (1859)

The theory of evolution is absolutely stunning to me. An understanding of it and the immense weight it brings to our existence may terrify some, but it should enthral and excite us all: it provides the true account of our origins, uniting us with everything on Earth alive today and everything that once was. ♥

Something I do wanna address is this: although many people choose not to accept it (weirdly, around 40% of USA and UK citizens don't) it’s not a case of belief, and denying it due to faith is just ignoring what we've found. The entirety of human and animal biology only makes sense because evolution has happened. The common 'argument' that evolution is "only a theory" misses the point of what that actually means: it's accepted as scientific fact just like gravity, or the existence of atoms and how they interact, which too are "only theories". A scientific theory is more than just speculation: it's a well thought-out group of propositions and principles that explain facts about the real world, which must be testable and allow for verifiable predictions. "Making predictions" doesn't mean that we can predict the future of evolution – that's pretty much impossible – but that we can predict what we should find when looking at the fossil record and into animals' genetic codes, and with every new discovery these predictions are proven again and again to be true. A theory becomes 'truth' when so much evidence has accumulated in its favour (with an absence of decisive evidence against it) that virtually all reasonable people will accept it. This makes evolution fact in the eyes of science. This doesn't mean that a 'true' theory can’t ever be falsified, of course – science shouldn't be arrogant, and theories are always subject to change in the light of new evidence. But as it stands, it doesn't seem at all likely that the theory of evolution – such an obvious phenomenon when you come to understand it – will ever be overturned.

Removing an 'intelligent designer' from our world view needn't reduce the awe or beauty in how we see ourselves: we weren't deliberately created for any purpose, but have arisen through billions of years of unconscious tinkering by natural selection, set in motion by conditions that could have produced something so different had they been ever so slightly changed, to become what we are, as has everything else around us. To me – and hopefully many others – that's so much more beautiful and satisfying as an explanation of our existence.

Of course, many who accept evolutionary theory into a religious world-view believe that an intelligent creator set evolution in motion through some means, which is totally reasonable: religion doesn't have to be incompatible with evolution!
Discussion and questions in the comments are very welcome! With a good understanding of evolution I can hopefully give decent answers or at least direct you to where you can find them c:
For those wanting to better-familiarise themselves with the theory and evidence – perhaps because you're not sure about where you stand, or would just like to add to your current understanding – I'd really recommend the book Why Evolution Is True by Jerry A. Coyne, which is a very readable recent text.

The fossil in the background is my favourite famous dinosaur-bird transitional species, Archaeopteryx! ♥

I think the people who view this whole process is just "eating in order to survive and reproduce people are missing a big part of the picture. Sure reproduction and survival are the goals, I think we can admit that but I think what's much more important is the path to get there, and that path has over billions of years continuously inspired more cooperation get started with jeans coming together to form DNA DNA coming together to form cells, cells living inside other cells, and becoming part of each other, cells bonding together to form larger organisms larger organisms forming social groups that they need to survive! It's an increasing chain of cooperation, and I find that beautiful bed missed all the strife and chaos and hostility of the universe that it's cooperation bringing together of things that truly seems to drive change on the planet earth.

I am actually a Catholic Christian and I believe in evolution, but in the fact it was created to be that way. I think the assumption that all animals and everything came at the very exact same time is ridiculous. The bible is not meant to be a scientific text book.

yeah, I'm open minded with religion really, and I love the idea that a god somewhere out there made evolution. I really don't like it when people say, "god doesn't exist because evolution!!" or "evolution doesn't exist because god!". like, cant you just realize that the two can work together? anyways I 100% agree with you!!!

also I don't get why people comment trying to start fights on stamps like this?? like, if you don't believe in it personally that's fine but why take the time to comment something rude on a stamp about it? its really cringey and annoying tbh

You also have to wonder how it might have panned out differently, if certain variables were even slightly different, as well as how creatures will continue to change in the future.

Honey, people who tell you that you're "less evolved" or "closer to monkeys" don't understand how evolution actually works. No human is "closer to monkeys" than another. We are all equidistant from a common ancestor that we have with monkeys.

The basis of science is to "question everything" right? You said so yourself. So then why is it that when I question it, I get ridiculed? Am I not allowed to give my own input on theory. Life itself is bias.
It is not scientists' role to "cherry-pick" what truths to publish. But it is our role to find out "truth" for our own, of ourselves.
If I were to think like the rest of you, it wouldn't be science. Even the bible says "question everything". So why do I need to look for answers from one theory.

If I were to accept what you accept you, it wouldn't be science.

Well....evolution doesn't place you in any disadvantageous point than ''white people'', both lines just adapted to other environments.
Black people are more resistant to sunburn, as they come from more hot and arid regions, while white people have their own adaptions towards colder places. Does that sound like discrimination to you?

I think not

Evolution IS beautiful. The sheer freaking diversity of lifeforms that it has produced is just...awesome, and I don't just mean that in the sense of being "cool", but also that it's utterly breath-taking.

No it's not. It's indoctrination. Plus that whole nonsense of life originating from a chemical soup, there is no way that in an atmosphere without oxygen that there could be an ozone layer and without an ozone layer, there could be no protection from the UV light and thus any ammonia would be dissolved, which renders the miler urey experiment useless. Plus there are no fossils that indicate missing links, only a few skulls and incomplete skeletons that you used a slippery slope fallacy for.

I personally don't believe in evolution, but I absolutely respect the opinions and views of others who do believe in it! Little Pixel Heart Little Pixel Heart

People who try to shove their beliefs down other peoples' throats are awful people; those are the people that I don't respect. No one should ever try to force their beliefs on people, and I feel like way too many people do that these days, no matter their beliefs...

So even though I personally don't believe it, I absolutely respect everyone's belief in it; it's such a shitty thing to do to go "No, my religion is right because [insert long rant here]" you feel?

<3 It is beautiful!!
Removing evolution from biology reduces so much of our world's awe inspiring complexity and splendor.
Now I remind myself that having different view points on this doesn't harm people the way some other beliefs do, but I do feel a little hurt when people don't give the universe (or God, if you prefer) credit for just how complex and dynamic life on earth is.

I can't really speak on the behalf of anyone's God, but  if *I* made something so amazing as all of creation, I know I would want nothing more than for people to dig deeper and appreciate all those intricacies, surprises, and billions of years of work I put into my art rather than have it simplified and glossed over!

I'm a Christian (nondenominational thank you very much), but I believe that many things happened before Genisis (the first part of the Bible) so any idea is possible, there may have been mammals that looked like the cross between apes and humans an therefor made it look like we came from apes. But that's just my opinion :)
