Description
Gorgeous exposed serpentinite in Coverack Cove on The Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall, captured on a rock-hunting adventure earlier this year
Serpentinite is a beautifully unusual rock type usually only found at the ocean floor, but is exposed on the most south-westerly tip of the UK as part of a world-famous ophiolite complex (where part of the ocean crust was once thrust up onto the land). Here you can see a thin dolerite dyke within the host rock that's offset by a small fault, and the beautiful colours serpentinite expresses when wet. It can be blood-red like this, ranging to blueish and emerald-green (from which its name, likening it to a serpent, is derived).
Wooo geology!!
